Our Performances

Chinese lion dance and Chinese martial arts have always been closely related. Our team’s traditional Southern Chinese lion dance comes from our Choy Lee Fut Kung Fu curriculum, as taught by master Chen Yong Fa (5th generation direct descendant of Chen Heung, the founder of Choy Lee Fut).

The Sydney Choy Lee Fut Academy has been around for over 25 years and we have been performing lion dances ever since. Our senior team members have over 15 years of experience and have participated in lion dances numerous competitions, official functions and Australian television appearances.

Performance extras

Our team are fully accredited with all the official pyrotechnics licenses by WorkCover Australia. This enables the legal use of Chinese String Firecrackers during the performance*. Because we are a martial arts schools, kung fu performances (including those with weapons) are also available as part of the lion dance. The lion dance can also feature the Dai Tao Fut (big-headed Buddha).

*NOTE: It has come to our attention that some lion dance teams are holding performances that involve firecrackers without being aware of the necessary licensing. Please be aware that all performances with firecrackers require this license, and a performance by an unlicensed team could result in your business incurring a fine directly from WorkCover and your local council ($1000 on the spot and up to $10,000 if it goes to court).
